47 M Farmall / Weak Starting

Gotta 47 M with a new battery showing 6.4 volts. new starter button, new heavy duty cables too ground and starter. negative ground system. Alll new ends and clean metal too metal. Just got starter checked at shop and came back good.
Starter will barely roll tractor over and sometimes wont roll thru compression...acts like a weak battery!. Same problem before I changed all the wires, battery, button and had starter checked.

Any ideas????

You say NEG ground, these are POS ground, probably don't mater much to the starter though.

Are the connections all REAL clean???

What size are these "heavy duty" cables?

What is voltage while cranking?

Unless your starter shop has a way to test under load the starter may still be in poor shape

try moving the ground cable for the battery directly to one of the starter mounting bolts instead of the tractor chassis. my 48 m was always a slow cranker, everything was replaced new and heavy duty, still cranked slow. moving the ground was the solution. i kind of think that corrosion, grease and oil gives a bad connection over all the years.

Good idea, I have to do that to mine someday.

I loosened and torqued some of the bolts before I painted and all has been well.

One can check with a volt meter and find the poor connections easy enough.

There must be a bad connection somewhere. If the ground cable is long enough attach it to one of the mounting bolts on the starter. A good system sure will start theM on 6v. Ours even started after the FireCrater kit. That was in 62 and the tractor was new in 49 same starter.

My Grand Dads had all the hop up kits in it and it always started good on 6 volt.

The monkey that has it now put 12 on it, but claims to have saved the 6 volt stuff.

I am trying to buy it from him but he still uses it a bit on his farm, maybe someday.

Same thing happend to my son. Finally did some part swapping and found that the armature itself was bad and did not show up with testing.
different armature and the engine spins over great!

Oops...meant pos. ground.

Anyway....after all day in this heat....I traced it down too a short in the battery. It was showing 6.4 volts but a trip too Napa and putting it on they're tester showed up a short in the battery under load. 105 bucks later for a new commercial duty 6 volt battery and we're starting just fine now!.

Dont always trust your battery even though the voltage is showing O.K.!

Thanks for all the replies!.....Its nice too know there is help too keep these ole girls up and running!.

Actually 6.4 volts should have been at least a clue indicating a defective battery. A good 6 volt battery, fully charged, should read around 7 volts or a bit higher.
