Wheel weights

I have a Super M that I use for snow removal. I'd like to do away with the CaCL in the rear tires. How many sets of rear wheel weights would I need to be able to do that?

It depends on what size tire you have and how full it is. I have heard on this site that three weights per side is pretty good, a standard weight is about 145#, I think. I have loaded 14.9/38s and 1 set of weights on my H and it has great traction.

Ya fuild in the tires can be a pain in the back sides but did you know it does work better then wheel weights. Reason is it puts the pressure of the weight right in the tread of the tire not on a bag of air. That said you figure a lbs per gal of fluid if not 1.5 lbs per gal. I do not have a chart to tell me how many gal. a 38 inch tire has but a 13.6X28 has around 32gal so a 38 will be at least 10gal more if not 20 or 30

if they are 13.6x38's, a 5 lb /gallon chloride mix will give about 614 lbs per tire of aditional weight. figure about 4 weights per tire to get about the same weight.

If you are mainly plowing snow with it I would put three weights on each rear wheel. Have a Farmall B with loader. Took the fluid out when we put new tires on it. Put 1 weight on each rear wheel and have a buzzsaw hanging on rear of tractor. It plows snow as good as if it had fluid on tires and wheels won't rust out.

You do know there are alternatives to Cacl in tires, wheather it is cost effective to refill with these is your call. I can't image a Super M needing traction for snow removal. You can use beet juice, windshield washer fluid, RV antifreeze. They won't have mush more weight than just water, but is kind on rubber and rims. Some people have used CaCl in tires for years in inter-tubes and no problems, when you have a leak then you have a mess. Easier to hang some weight off the back of the tractor for traction. Many smaller tractors do this routinely. IMHO

My dad back in the 70's had one set of rear wheel weights and chains. Had no problem at all moving snow, and we always had problems getting drifted in.

A set of chains will take the place of all those wheel weights. I would run with one set and chains. I pushed snow with one set and no chains and it was terrible.

Exactly. There is no substitute for a good set of rear tire chains. None!

May depend on how many weights are on it if any before the fluid is removed. Have a M with 13.6 X 38 and 4 weights a wheel. One set was on before fluid removal. works okay but doesn't seem to be good as the fluid was for traction.

MNC, I agree with glennster! But I would go one step further! You need 6 sets of wts not 4 sets. 3 sets of solids and 3 set of splits.
3 solid wts on the outside of the wheel and 3 splits on the insides of each wheel.
145 x 6 = 870 lbs/wheel
Use 5/8 allthread in the 4 factory holes in the cast wheel to mount it all up nice and neat. Hope this helps!

I agree with Rich, fluid puts the weight down low and where it is needed, and it works differently than just pure weight.

But, unless you are doing heavy field work, I think fluid is a pain, just because of the caustic nature, etc.

If you want to switch out the CaCL, use windshield washer fluid.

Also,a good set of double ring chains will be a real eye-opener.

There is a decent set of ring chains at Jackels in Ft Atkinson, WI right now. They came on a C. Not sure if they run 38" rims.

Thist link should tell you how much weight you have in there now.
