Explain this one. Very clear letter A for the month.

it might be a 4 or an 8 but its not supposed to be an A i think its a 4 or another number what are some other cast dates on the tractor? what modle is it?

Early MD engine first year built. Think the block was cast in january 1941. Other codes on tractor. Clutch housing 2-21-K. Trans housing pic.

(quoted from post at 02:14:47 07/19/11) A is not month as numbers were for the month and the letters are the year.

No kidding, but clearly that is a casting code. Clearly that is the letter "A" at the beginning of the code.

There must be a reason why it is the way it is.

I noticed something very similar on one of my tractors. I think it was on my 1940 M, maybe on the belly pump? I'll go take another look later today.

I don't think it is a casting code as such because it does not have the "asterisks" in between the letters and numbers.

Rusty its in the regular location for a MD casting code and some other codes are made the same, see other picture on transmission housing.
Engine and trans. codes are upside down.
Not positive but think the engine was assembled in march of 41.

I took a quick look at my M, but didn't find that curious casting code. I know I was working on the M when I noticed it, but now I can't remember exactly what it was that I was working on.

Not a "Casting Code" since it was not cast into the chunk but was riveted in later. This may indicate an assembly date or location with the year code posted at the end. Casting code dates always precede the assembly date.

The best answer I can find after researching this is that someone in the foundry made a mistake that day. The letter 'A' was used as the prefix letter on many different part numbers in the 30's and 40's, and perhaps someone got confused on what number they were putting together.

On this particular part, I am assuming it is the engine block? If so, is there a provision for a fuel pump with a block off plate over it? My brother has a block like that and there are strange numbers on it too, as these were originally intended for truck use, but were redirected to tractors to help meet demand.

The only other possibility is that the part was intended for Australia, though those parts were usually prefixed with two letters, AP, and again this was a part number system, not a date system, so the specter of a mistake comes back into play.

Great question!
