M casting codes

I was told you could get the model year of the a tractor from the casting codes Mine is 12 30 S cast into the block I also have another block from a M that is cast 12 2 O. How does that work? If it works how it was explaned to me 1939 started out as the letter A every year the letter changed and they skipped the letter V. But I going by that how did I end up with a M block with a S code? That would make it 1958 going off my theory and that wont work.

S casting code is 1949 so 12-30-S would mean the block was cast on 12/30/1949.

IH started using A in 1931. A '39 M would have a I casting code as they started production in July of '39.

Casting codes can be a little deceiving when trying to determine model year If the block in your M is original your M would be a 1950 model yr as IH started the new model yr on Nov 1.

Casting code however would have the date the part was cast and not the model yr. I have a '53 SM that every major casting has a 12 / 52 casting date. Serial number shows it to be a '53 with a production date in Mar of '53

Yes. It works for any IH tractor.

The only blip in the sequence is 1950, which had T, U, and V letters that year.

1955 started over at A again.

T was 1950 but U and V were 1951 along with W.
Starting in '55, the next time through the alphabet didn't use I, Q, U, or V. 1977 started over agin with A.
