Well I got my our newly acquired 400d back together this weekend. I replaced the primary pump seal and the roll pin for the drive coupling. I got it running but I have no fuel pressure and I cannot get my primary filter to bleed out the top. Am I missing something simple? Will these motors run even without the primary pump working? I'll add I did have a hard time getting the rest of the system bleed out.

Did you Bleed the filters with the tractor running on gas cylce? As I recall, that's what the book says to do to bleed the secondary filter (closest one to Injector pump), and that's what I did with mine. While running on gas your fuel pressure gauge should register even though it is not metering fuel to the Injectors. You'll also need to give it a little diesel throttle while running on gas and bleed the injectors. Hope this helps. -Andy

Oh, And My 450D did run without the transfer pump working. Someone had a cheap electric fuel pump on mine, without the trasfer pump even on the tractor and it ran. I left the switch off a few times and it still ran. Tractor had little to no power with that electric pump on it. It noticeably starved for fuel when accelerating.

First filter the fuel gets to should bleed gravity from tank unless there's a problem in lines or water trap. Final should have primary pump pressure if pump is getting fuel flow. Yes some will run without the primary pump working.
If you have fuel flow and no pressure on the pump gauge, check the primary pump again. Did you check the pump out for a problem that may be the cause of coupling to fail? Sometimes the primary pumps have gear damage or gear clearance problems when the coupling fails.

My MD doesn't bleed the two gravity things for crap. Don't forget you need to have the fuel level above the bleeder on the filter or gravity will not work.

Thanks guys for all the info. I'll try to pull the primary pump apart again and go from there. I'll keep you all posted.
