Farmall A engine speed.

I know most As had their engine"s max speed set at 1540 RPM no load, 1400 under load. I just read that early Super As that still used 113 CID had max under load speeds set at 1650 RPM to improve power a little. Which I guess would mean no load max speed for them would be 1790 RPM (140 RPM difference). Would it be safe to bump up a non Super A to that speed without any major adverse effects? Also would it be worth doing for the little power gain? thanks.

The Farmall Super A engine speeds were the same as the Farmall A engine speed, 1400rpm under load and 1540 no-load. The farmall C had the engine speed raised to 1650 rpm under load. This was the same change in full load speed from the 1400 rpm of the Farmall F-12 to the 1650 rpm of the Farmall F-14. The W-12 used 1700 rpm and the O-12 used 2000 rpm. All the 12 and 14 tractors used the same engine (apart from governor springs and weights) as the F-12. The F-12 engine was also 113 cid, the same as the Farmalls A, B. Super A and C

Gene, would that depend on having cast iron pistons or aluminum pistons? In other words, were all C113 and C123 engines that had a max. rpm of 1650 equipped with aluminum pistons?
Thanks, Hendrik

I have a guide book for the different Farmall models with specs, and it says early Super As had C113 engines that were set at 1650 RPM under load. It also says later Super As were upgraded to C123 engines and the speed reduced back to 1400 RPM. The guide says neither early or late Super As had their HP tested.

I wouldnt know about that but sounds good. To find an engine thats never been opened up would be quite a feat as all have had an overhoul since new. I did have two engines that were distillate fuel had dished in pistons and still had the original manifolds. still have the pistons and rods.

There is a lot of misinformation out there -- you have to know who came up with the numbers and where they got them. The 113 in the A and Super A have the same max loaded rpm, 1400. It was increased to 1450 for the 123 in the Super A1.

My Farmall Super A manual dated 12-15-47 (i.e. 1947) states Engine Speed (governed, maximum full load) as 1400 rpm. Maximum no=load speed is not mentioned.

I just looked at one of my IH serviceman's manuals. It says the U2 power units which are C113 engines, came set at 1800 and 2000 no load RPMs. So it looks like the C113s in As could be set to run as high as 2000 RPMs. I think IH set As at 1400 RPM so the PTO would be at 541 RPM.
