Farmall H starting question

Hi guys! Just bought an H a couple weeks ago that was converted (of course) to 12 volts. Seems to be getting hard to find any that HAVEN"T been converted. Anyway, it started and ran just fine, but the starter button needed to be pushed in a couple of times for it to kick in.
Battery was dead the other day (my fault) and I had to jump it. Started great, but now it won"t start at all. When I push the starter button in, it draws current, but the starter doesn"t do so much as a click. The negative terminal from the battery starts to heat up as well. Tried to jump straight from the batter and didn"t get any response either. What do you guys think? I think it"s still the 6 volt starter button, if that matters at all.

Starter is stuck, try to turn engine with the fan. Most likely it will not turn. Just loosen the starter or completely remove it to get starter drive back to where it belongs.

Pete is correct.
It is common. Another method of "fixing" it is to put it in 5th and rock the tractor violently forward and back by putting force on the rear tires.
When a click is herd the starter will be free.
To fix it a new style (upgrade) starter drive can be installed. It has no big flat wound spring, and seems to make a good repair.
If it is just freed, it will do it again about every 20 starts, then getting more frequent.
There is no issue with 12 volts running the 6v starter, ours have been that way for 30 years. Jim

My starter did the same thing

Went through 2 buttons (temper temper) before I figured the starter. It needed a total rebuild.

Thanks guys. I will try taking the starter off and remounting to see how that works. I did try the fan and it does turn freely. Now the next question...where to get the starter rebuilt here in Mid-Michigan?
Thanks again guys, as always. Love this forum.

With high respect, An H fan turns pretty easily without turning the engine. While push/pulling the wheels in 5th the fan should move, not by moving the fan by hand. You are looking for the engine being free to turn. The jammed starter actually jambs the engine from turning as well. Jim

In addition to what others have posted, now is the time to make sure that all battery cable connections are clean and solid. Just in case.

Thanks again guys. Took the starter off and remounted it but it locked right back up, so gave it a 5 foot pull with the truck and it fired right up. Thanks again!

(quoted from post at 11:25:15 07/14/11) Janicholson; Where do you get the up grade starter drive . Is it ih or something else? Thanks, Buck

I believe YT sells them right here. I have seen them on eBay and I would assume your Tiscos, Steiners, etc would have them as well.

How difficult a job is a starter rebuild?

You mentioned you are using a 12v battery with a 6v starter. Would my thinking be right, that one would need a 12v generator and 12v regulator, 12v coil and 12 starter sol. for this to work.

The starter wouldn't really care what voltage it was. It may die a little quicker, but not too likely. You would need a 12v charging system to charge your 12v battery. If you kept the 6v system it would only put out 7.2v and not get the job done. A 12v coil is one way to convert a tractor or you can use a resister to drop your 12v to 6v. From the factory none of the letter series had a solenoid.
