Farmall Regular Clutch issuses

Hello, I have a 31 regular and I recently changed the clutch. It looks to have been changed over to a F 20 as it did not have the multi disk clutch disk. After changing it does the same as before the clutch pedal cannot be depressed and it grinds when trying to put into gear. I changed the clutch disk and the pressure plate with the same type that was in it (F 20?)

Just thought of something. Is the clutch linkage frooze up. Did the clutch linkage move freely when clutch was out of it ?

yes the linkage moves freely, the throwout bearing looked to be good and moved freely. The pedal moves slightly but when the throwout bearing comes into contact with the fingers on the pressure plate it is hard. I guess it could be the pressure plate is froze up, how do you check and how would you free it?

Well yeah, the fingers need to be able to move. It's a job to take one all apart and clean everything and then put it back together and adjust to specs. But it can be done. Email me if you want to tackle it or I can clean and adjust it for you or trade for one I have ready to go.

Helped my Dad change clutch in his 31 way back about 50+ years ago. Working from memory here, but will take a SWAG at it.
What was it doing that required changing? Was it slipping, dragging, noisy?
My first guess is that the disk is in hind-end around bass ackwards. The short nose goes toward the flywheel. If accidently installed with the long nose toward flywheel it will set the disk too far against the pressure plate, holding it tight in the released position & cause it to drag/grind when trying to shift into gear. Pressure plate already as far as it can go.
Another possibility is that installer forgot to remove the 3 bolts that hold the pressure plate in the released position for shipping/installing. This would have the plate already at its limit, can't move it no matter how hard you stomp on the pedal. Disk wold float free, not cause grinding, would go into gear easily, but wouldn't move under power.
Only solution is to take it out & start over, not all that difficult to do.
In case the disk happened to be in backwards, DESTROY it with a torch or BFH. It is most likely bent & will have to come apart a third time to put in a good one.
I have been wrong before, but this is my best guess without doing a hands on inspection.

out of curiosity, do you have the disk in backwards? I just did mine, and yup, I had a 50/50 chance of getting it right, and I got it wrong......

hello cowman, after reading your post in regards to the f-20 clutch, I have a similar problem but I know its my pressure plate.(rusted and stuck). you mentioned rebuilding and i was wondering what you would charge exchange. my plate is good just mouse infested from sitting. my e-mail address is "[email protected]" thanx for your time. duane in iowa. quote="Nebraska Cowman"](reply to post at 18:45:13 07/13/11) [/quote]
