F 560 operating temperature

Anyone know off hand about what normal operating temp. should be for a 560 gasser? Mine is just a little over 200. I have been told that is high, should be more like 180. I have a lot of drop in oil pressure as it heats up (starts out at 50psi and at full operating temp it drops to between 10-20psi. Just wondering if I put a 180 thermostat in if I could improve the oil pressure at full temperature.

Is the gauge accurate?

FWIW, here's what the partsbook shows: 108120R91 THERMOSTAT (167 deg. - 172 deg.)

When my M gets fully heated up after about an hour or so of steady work, the oil pressure drops a good 5-10 lbs.

This is telling me that I'd better be thinking about some bearings in the engine.

if it still has the original guage the needle should be sitting in the center of the green on the U in run when working it. should not notice any significant loss of pressure when engine is hot. changing theremostats will have little effect. its telling you its time for engine O/H.

Be sure the radiator fins are clean/clear, and that the fan belt is properly tensioned. Check for V-belt sheave wear. A worn impeller on the water pump can cause poor flow. Check the flow rate. Good Luck!

Stick a thermometer in the radiator after it is warmed up & circulating [pressure cap loose]. If it is over-heating with a 180 degree stat, it may be sticking.

one other thing; check the oil pressure using a different gauge other than the one on the dash. sometime the gauges develop an internal leak, and are innacurate. you can tap into the oil jounal passage on the block, where the dash gauge screws in. put the new gauge there, and see what you get.
