IH hydraulic cylinder repair

Have a IH asae standard hydraulic cylinder 2"bore 8"stroke 7/8-14 threads, single acting cylinder that i want to put new packing in. I caint seem to get it apart got retaining clip out and tried spinning it thinking it would thread into the cylinder housing but need some help. thanks brad
 
There are two types like that I am familiar with. One , you take snap ring out of groove near top of cyl by turning it out through that groove and it sounds like that is the one you have. They wear a groove above snap ring making it difficult to pull apart but you have no other choice than pull rod out. Like hook on with a tractor.
The other style have a snap ring on the bottom of piston and you go through the inlet port and push snap ring off.
