Farmall A Starter

I am havng problems with my Farmall A Starter. When I hit the starter button, the starter motor spins, but does not engage the flywheel. I have taken it off and examined the gear teeth on both the starter drive as well as the flywheel, and neither shows any wear. The drive moves very freely on the center shaft, but obviously does not engage. Would a new drive fix this problem, and is so how would I go about replacing it?? Or, am I stuck buying a new starter?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.<p>Jeff

How fast does it spin maybe not fast enough to enguage the bendix. When you fasten the starter in a vise then apply battery voltage does the bendix jump out fast. You could have bad connections also Have you oiled the bendix end on the starter as the armaature cand get dry from lack of lube and drag the starter down.

Bendix is thoroughy oiled and moves freely with just the flick of a finger. Is this too loose?? That's why Im puzzled as to why it will not engage.

There could be lot's of things wrong, some major, some minor. did you open the starter up and look at the brushes and commutator? Are the bushings ok? did it slowly get to this point or did it all of a sudden start acting this way? Do you have good, clean, connections from the battery to the starter/frame of tractor?

Best case, you need brushes and the commutator turned and cut. Worst case, you have bad windings. Best thing is to take it to a starter/generator shop and have then go through it if you are not familiar with the internals of a starter. To check the windings, you will need a growler.
