Super A Steering gear box

Working on my Super A, replaced the seal on the bottom of the gear box, really didn't have too much play in the sterring wheel so only replaced the seal. Also couldn't remove the cast plug at the end of the steering shaft (another story). I filled the gear box with oil and it all ran out a couple of days later. What can I put in it that is thicker than 90W? Need something thick as bee honey. Considered just filling with grease but don't like the idea.

To me that seal is one of the most critical on the tractor in that it has a whole quart of oil sitting on top of it. All others are just splash seals.

Thanks guys

I think most of those old gearboxes have corn head grease in them or Grade 0 grease. That is what I put in mine.

You can use SAE 140, but if you lost it that fast it won't help much. You are sure you installed the seal with the lip facing the oil? If so, there is nothing wrong with using grease. I did mine as part of my "restoration". I used 85W140, it does not leak. Wasn't leaking before I worked on it either.

If you didnt replace the bushing the out-put shaft will move and that could let the lube out. Im working on one rite now new bushings, seals and key and it will be like new again. I will fill with 140wt.

Yep, that is what I wanted to do, but could not remove the 3" diameter plug on the end of the steering shaft so didn't order the kit. The cast iron is chipped off around the cast nut that you grab hold of. Anyone ever had this happen and if so, how did you get that rascal out of there? Looked like my only option was to find a replacement plug, and drill some holes in it and bust it out.
I'm not fooling with it now as it is all reassembled and will try some of these great suggestions of oil.
