Super A throw-out bearing

Just split my Super A to change out the cracked block after a 10 year rest in the back field. When I pulled the throw-out bearing, what I see is not what I expected. Instead of a bearing there is what looks like a "carbon" bushing of some kind. Nothing moves in the cast housing but there is a grease fitting that looks like it greases that "carbon" bushing. Is that bushing supposed to turn like a bearing type throw-out bearing does? Or do the clutch fingers just ride on that carbon bushing? I think it is supposed to turn but I thought I"d ask you guys. I have to replace it because there is a chip on the surface that the clutch fingers ride on.
When looking through the parts here, I see that there is a standard type greaseable or non-greaseable bearing available. Does this replace the "carbon" type bushing that I found in mine? Thanks in advance for any insights anyone might have.

The graphite type bearing does not turn. It does need to be greased regularly. There was/is a conventional type throwout bearing for the Super A. However, it uses a different carrier than the graphite bearing. You have to change out more than just the bearing to change types.

What you found was the old graphite-block bearing. It did not turn. The grease fitting was only to lube its carrier along the shaft.

If you're changing ANYthing (as in block, clutch, machining the flywheel . . .) it will be worth your while to spring for the newer-style thrust bearing and the carrier to hold it. Those graphite bearings worked beautifully in a new installation, but their performance was based on the way they would "wear in." Change anything, even just a whit, about the geometry of the way the clutch fingers meet the face of that graphite block, and you'll tear whole chunks out of it, and wind up having to re-split anyway.

Change it out while you've got things apart.

So, can I get a new graphite insert or do I HAVE to get the new style? If I need to get the new style, where do I get it? I couldn't find it here, I could only find the bearing, not the carrier. Thanks again and also for the quick replies!!

Sorry to be so long getting back.

The thrust bearing is a thrust bearing and available about anywhere. The carrier for it is strictly a dealer item.

As far as the graphite bearing, I *believe* that that it's still available from the dealer and am pretty sure it is a single part, i.e., the graphite is part and parcel with the carrier and not available separately. That from the fact that the parts book lists a single part for the graphite bearing, and the separate carrier and bearing for the more conventional type.

You might try calling Ken Updike at Carter and Gruenewald (external_link). 608.455.2411. I think they have a toll free, 8xx-FARMALL but I can't recall if its 866, 877 or 888.

If you really want the graphite and it's available, Bermuda Ken will be the guy who has or can get it for you. If it's not out there, or you decide on the newer-style bearing anyway, he can fix you right up.
