Farmall A missing on 14 Update

well after spending $100 in points condenser rotor cap plugs wires and mag cap and spending 3 hours tearing it apart timing it 5 or 6 times resetting the points 5 or 6 times I said ok what can it be it would run on cylinder 2 & 3 with 1 and 4 having nothing plugs taken out and sparking like crazy big improvment. put them back in and nothing well I said stuck vlaves? well I pulled the valve cover and on #1 exhaust valve tappet rod was poped out and #4 the intake tappet rod was poped out. put them back on set the gap put it back together and just like magic 2 days of getting very upset are gone and the grass is cut. Dad is happy and my chores are behind but what a relief!!!!! any ideas of how in the world this could have happened? I think after sitting all winter the valves were stuck and popped them off?
Thanks for all the help!
Chad

Chad, good for you! Best thing you can do is to check the valve lash. correctly adjusted valves should not have that happen. It could be related to the valves hanging up, but I would definately check the lash. Also, if the valves were stuck, you could have bent push rods, which can cause that to happen.

well i guess compression check should have been #1 on the list.
ya must have been stuck valves.
but hey its running and you learned a lot.

Yep I would agree with both suggstions below, especially the valve lash. When I first started up my H after reassembling the engine the rod hopped out of the rocker on #4 cylinder. Didn't adjust that valve correctly.

for sure check and adjust the lash .014 hot. if you havent done it all ready.
what i believe happened is the valves probably got pushed down then stuck lightly. then when running the heat loosened them up and in the mean time the rods fell out.

I almost had check the compression but just couldn't believe it was it. But the problem I had is there was no spark to start with because my dad had played with everything to start with.
but I will know what to look for next time! the old girl needed a tune up anyway should be good for another 40 years lol.

Stuck valve or bad valve adjustments is my guess. I would think the rod would have bent if the valve was stuck. I am not a little engine expert yet so that may not be possible???

How much for a used tune up kit? I would like to do my B before I try and sell it and I hate to invest too much that I can't recover.

Chad - I have a Super H that kicks out a push rod or two on the first startup EVERY spring. Once the rods are reinserted it starts/runs like fine watch the rest of the year.

It's been doing this for 10 - 15 years now. Valve lash is set per spec and the rocker mechanisms are oiling as they should. All I can figure is a valve or two (seems it's never the same ones...) stick open over the idle winter months.

Try running some Mobil 1 in the crankcase and report back after one or two springs of it not crapping out it's pushrods due to sticky valves.

Yep, it DOES work!
