1953 Super H not running will

I have a Super H that has always run great. Yesterday while using it to rake hay it almost seemed like it was running out of gas. I barely got it back home. I checked the points they seemed to be correct. I tried adjusting the carb. It will set an idle beautifully at idle. I rev it up and it almost dies then it seems like Its going to run ok the acts like its going to die again. I am guessing I have some dirt in the carb.My dad says it is the valves but I don't think they would be the problem that suddenly. Also, since the carb is hooked to the govenor do you loosen it at the carb or at the govenro end which is best thanks in advance for your help.

Sounds like a fuel problem. Clean screen on sediment bowl and inlet screen to carb. If you have a in line filter take it off and throw it away.

Sounds like a fuel flow restriction.

First disconnect the fuel line at the carburetor and check the flow. You should get a solid stream of gas about the size of a pencil out of the line. However if it just dribbles out, check/clean the sediment bowl and screen. Also check inside the tank for a bit of trash caught in the tank outlet above the sediment bowl.

If the fuel flow is good to the carb, unscrew the fuel inlet nut from the carb and check/clean the screen on the backside of the inlet nut.

If the inlet screen is clear you'll now need to go inside the carburetor. Fortunately you can drop the bowl and check the innards without removing the carb from the engine. Simply remove the 4 screws that hold the bowl to the throttle body and drop the bowl free. Check inside the bowl for dirt, etc. Also check the float for free movement and good fuel flow when in the down position.

Hope this helps...

Thanks to all that replied. It did end up being a large piece or dirt in the carb that was causing me the problems. Not sure how it got throught the sediment bulb filter and in line filter both. I am running great again.
