I have a 404 utility that I bought just a while ago. I was running it and it just plain shut off. The motor will fire right up when I crank the starter but the minute I stop cranking it shuts down again. It acts like it is not pumping the gas as soon as I stop cranking the starter. It doesn't have a fuel pump, soI can't figure it out. I took the carb apart (it was rebuilt just before I bought it) and it sems ok. Any hel would be very appreciated.

I'm not very familliar with a 404 but the generic answer would be that the ballast resistor going to the coil is bad. The coil gets it's voltage from a secondary source while cranking and then through the ballast when running. Therefore it runs only while cranking.

thanks for the suggestion. I will check into it.I was afraid it might have something to do with the governor, but electrical makes more sense.

I checked the parts book. The coil has the typical wire going to the distributor, The only "ballast resistor" is within the voltage regulator. There are two of them. One goes to the ground. The other goes to "relay" So I am assuming I should try a new regulator. Or could the ballast be internal to the coil? Thanks for any sugeestion. Electrical is beyond me..

Depending on the age of the tractor, the ballast resistor may be mounted right on top of the coil or if later model it may use a resistor wire coming into the starter solenoid. You can easily see ballast on coil, if not there, look at starter , if the one small terminal has a double wire then there is a resistance wire from there to ign switch.

Good to know. Thanks for clarifying it for me. I will find it tomorrow and get a new one and let you know how it goes I am assuming they are a generic item.
Thanks again
Tom

If the ballast resistor is not it, check the key switch if it has one. Or maybe the wires to it. Not familiar with the 404 enough to be more than generic help.

Run a separate wire from your battery to your coil then see if the engine will stay running. You will bypass your ignition switch with this setup. If it stays running I think you have a defective ballast resistor between your ignition switch and the coil. Hal

What's your serial number... parts book shows a resistor mounted to the top of the coil bracket for "C-135 engines w/Serial no. 114622 and below". (Key # 6.)

my uncles 706 did that the wire at the ballast resistor was bad check that first I guess I should say the end of the wire at the terminal was bad the insulation was still there,it looked ok but no connection good luck

Hi everyone,
This morning I took off the side panel and found a 1/2 split down the middle reisitor on the top of the solenoid.! You all were right and I am greatful. I used to be a deere guy, but waited and waited for a IH 424 or 444 with a loader. I wound up with a cherry 404 with a 2001 loader. hi-lo transmission Close enough.
Thanks again
