140 runs then dies

I have a 140 that starts and runs great for about 30 seconds then
dies. It doesn't sputter and die, it just shuts off as if I have turned
the tractor off. As soon as it dies I can restart it and it does the
same thing again. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to find and
fix the problem?

Sounds like it's burning fuel faster than the carb can supply it.

Assuming there aren't any major clogs from the tank to the carburetor, I'd start with adjusting the float and a good clean up in there. Then if it's still not working go on to a good thorough cleaning of the entire carb.

Is there a ballast resistor between your ignition switch and the coil? If there is it could be defective. Check the flow of gas from the tank to the carburetor. Should have a full flow from the tank. If that looks ok remove the tube fitting from the carburetor and look for a screen behind the fitting that may be plugged. Hal

I would take the sediment assembly off, clean it out real good. Then to a hobby store for a piece of aluminum tubing that will insert down the throat of the assembly, do so and then cut it off about an inch above (to clear any tank debris). Put it back on and hope that solves the problem. I wrote elsewhere a few moment ago of this happening on two my tractors today and both are running well.

I looked today and the tractor does have a ballast resistor. That is going to be the first thing i check, then i am going to see if the carb is getting a constant fuel supply, and if that still doesn't help i will clean the sediment bowl and the bottom of tank.

It would be great if you could post some pictures of your tractor (both sides; that way we could see what you've got and how its all set up. Most likely, its poor fuel flow. THANKS!
