I am finishing restoring a W 450 International and would like to find out the righgt color fcor the grill and the area under the "International" emblom. Someone told me it was the IH color number 923. Can anyone tell me what color paint to use?

Hi Dave: I talked to a guy at the RPRU a couple weeks ago about his new paint job on 350 and he said the area on the side of hood is a decal. He also said the IHC "white" is correct for the grill. I think the decal on the side is right, if my older memory is right, but I think the brighter white is not right color. I drove that series when they were new and the bright white does not agree with my memory. It's more of an off white towards cream color. If you really want it straight from the IHC History books then go to the Wisconsin Historical archives for IHC Paint decisions back when they started the 230-350-450 series 1957. Maybe some one else has that WebSite saved... and can post it. Lots of good info in that website..

I just did a 450 last year . The side panel is painted the same Ih white as is the grill. There is no decal for the side panel.Mine had the origanal paint on it when I redid it.

Dave: Your getting mixed replies? Check out Carter & Gruenwald who might be a little more accurate in selling classic Farmall stuff. They do not have 901 paint but rather 935 white. They also list the side panel DECAL for $11. ... But the Best info is on the IHC Historic website I mentioned, other wize you will get lots of different ideas about what the IHC factory really did use. ag

Ih did not use a decal on side panel of 450.It was painted with stainless steel emblems. The 450 I redid had the orignal paint with dealer sticker still visable. The white behind emblems was paint. If you go back to parts manuals there is no listing for a decal. Carter & Gruenwald doesn't have a OEM listing for a white side panel decal.

You need to look a little closer. Straight out of decal list on the CaseIH on-line catalog:

HOOD SHEET NAME PLATE BACKGROUND, LH
Product No: 2750017R1

HOOD SHEET NAME PLATE BACKGROUND, RH
Product No: 2750018R1

If your tractor had paint on the hood, it was added later. Probably the dealer repainted it before he slapped his sticker on it and sold it as a used tractor.

hI Dave:
I had a 450D and the bottom casting by the crank stup is red. The (Icall them ribcage pannels) one book calls them grill inserts were white.

Jim sorry I see they do make a decall. I got a freind that works Case IH dealer and he looked up numbers ($41.00 each) . He said he wasn't sure that it was O.E.M. for a 450. The 450 I bought had original paint. It only had one coat of paint on it. Dealers in this area never spent the time to strip a used tractor before painting them.

Keep in mind that many companies IH inc.,made miner changes all thru the manufatering cycle of a model. Most of these changes never efected FORM FIT OR FUNCTION. For example a vender may be late supplying a certain knob, bolt rivet or other feature. Rather than hold back a product for some liitle item they will go local purchase.use stock from another supplyer, or use up stock from the previus models,or even use parts that are for the new model. In your case decals, instead of the stainless farmall logo that they may have ran out of. they quickly came up with a decal to sufice in order to get the tractor out to the customer. Think about it like this. IH as a corp. does not get $$$$ for that unit until they can sell it. No mfgr in his right mind will keep a yard full of tractors at bay (w/customers waiting),over a logo. They will make some hasty eng. corrections and press on.

You must not know much about older Farmall because The numbers & lettering on a 450 were all stainless steel emblems.

You must not know much about manufactuing in general,Who knows what actually happened? I was not there and you propably were not either? The man claimed his 450 had a decal, another works for a dealer who found a decal p/n. this may not be oem I'm simply afording some thought of explanation as to why. My late father worked closely with IH engineering for 30 years at the vincins,IN plant. I never saw or owned a 450 that did not use ss logos, nor a ufo or ghost. But I ain't gonna say they don't exist!

The decal being discussed is the white one that provided the background for the stainless steel emblems.

IH did make decal replacements for some of the stainless steel emblems, but only after the emblems were discontinued from service. I don't know if that was done for the 450 emblems.

That make perfect sense. the one telltail too would be if there are the little holes in the side of the hood. No hole would probably mean factory decals which I do doubt too. I can see IH not wanting to do a production run after they no longer used the logo on new tractors. Making decals is alot easier and less costly. Yet when a customer comes in and wants a logo you got a part for him,it may be a modified part but it is a part that is factory.

Picture of farmall decal that was sold later to take the place of stainless. Even used the same basic part number as the stainless. Used to get them for use on tool boxes and trailer. Made a bright farmall decal.
Jim enjoyed the pictures and story in the redpower.
