Farmall A parts differences w/pics

My '47 Farmall A has a weld on the final drive, and the bull gear is loose on the shaft. So I bought an A rear half with torque tube, trans, and final drive. No ID plate on the half tractor. The '47 has a ribbed final drive, the unknown final has a smooth final casting. Can anyone tell me the difference and the approximate year of the smooth casting?

look for a casting number such as 10 25 s if you do a google search for ih casting codes this can give you the year it was cast in

Those ribs were added later on for strength. Did you get the final for the same side as if you got a left there wont be any place for the brake rod. Those final drives were left and right and not interchangeable.

Looking at this picture, does anyone have 2 of the pot metal parts that hold the axle seal? I need a couple of them.

I'm going to keep this one Teddy, but Messicks has 'em, Rear Axle Bearing Retainer with Oil Seal 42383D with Washer, $380.68 each.

Yes, Gene, they are both right side, I knew that they needed to be from reading on this forum. Otherwise I may have made a mistake.

Is there any information as to whether the ribbed final drives were any stronger, or the non ribbed finals being any weaker? Do you think one ribbed and one non ribbed on the tractor would work.
Best Regards,
Charlie

Thanks inh, I know the one on the tractor is correct for a 1947 A, but on the smooth one I can't seem to find the date code.
Best Regards,
Charlie
