Newcomer here with a question
I recently bought a nice 79 IH 184 lowboy for mowing 5 acres. Was told by the previous owner that it hasn't been used much for the last few yrs and hasn't had the oil changed for that long so after mowing with it a few times i changed the oil & filter putting in 10/30 oil, well after mowing a few more times its developed an oil leak that appears to be around the rear main that never had any leaks before.any suggestions ?

There is no other fix except to split the tractor and replace the seal.

Anything else is a short-term band-aid at best (i.e. "stop leak") and a waste of time/money at worst.

It's very odd how tractors seem to develop problems like this as soon as they change hands.

I would try Lucas oil stabilizer in it first before spliting it. Had old Ford truck mains started to leak. Ran two oil changes with Lucas and they stopped leaking. Ran truck for four years after that and never leaked.

If a machine isn't used much, and then is put under heavy continuous load, bad stuff can happen. I have heard of people buying 30 year old cars with 40,000 miles on them, used by little old ladies to drive to church. These cars never went over 35. When the owner dies, the new drivers use the cars for 70 MPH interstate driving. Not long after, the cars begin to burn a quart of oil per tank of gas. These style of problems can occur anywhere on a machine.
Good luck with your 184!

Don't know whether you have the operators manual, but it states to use only straight 30 wt low ash oil. The oil pump on cub engines is located on the back of the cam shaft well above the oil level in the pan. As far as leaks are concerned, my 184 has had the same problem as yours. I had to replace the aluminum casting that holds the seal, as well as use a speedy sleeve on the cranshaft.

Repairs can be made without removing the engine. If you need help my email is open. Joe
