Farmall M Diesel

Came accross a MD for sale and owner said it has a factory installed 450 diesel in it that was supposed to be tested then brought back to the dealer and dismantled for reasearch but was sold to this farmer instead, the serial # says its a 1951, anyone out there ever heard of this and are there any external items to look at to clarify identity? Thanks.

I'm not looking at any data in front of me, but the Farmall MD and 450 were separated by several years. The 400 was between those two models. I'd be suspicious if the owner is asking more than what a F-MD or 450 in comparable cost is worth.

Probably, it is a F-MD with a 450 motor. If the price is decent maybe it is better than a F-MD with the newer motor?

Keep us posted.

First thing I would do is check the date code on the engine block. If cast later than the tractor that would be a dead giveaway that the claim is boggis.
If a MD block is opened up to use 4.125 pistons and sleeves and all external parts are like a MD it could be hard to say what he has.
Block casting numbers for diesel blocks are most times near top or below the left frame rail.
MD blocks have a 4 number casting followed by letters. SMD through to 450 have 6 numbers followed by R1 through to R5. All original 450 late 400 blocks and some replacement blocks are R5.
Size and serial # stamped on block (above injection pump just below the head) may help tell where the block started out. Original MD blocks may have FBKMD or something like that before the serial # for size. After that cubic inch size was stamped before the serial #, Replacement blocks could be different.

D Slater Is Right If It Has A 400 Diesel Block In It It Will Have D-264 Stamped In Block Above Injection Pump On Block Close To Where Block And Head Meet If It Has A 450 Diesel Block It Will Have D-281 Stamped In The Same Spot Md Block Will Have Exactly What D Slater Typed Earlier
If It Has A 400D Or 450D Block In It Its Worthless To The True Collector Lots Of These Had Engine Swaps And Alot Of People Get Screwed On Thinking They Have The Real Thing When They Dont Just Like Making A Fake Smtad Pretty Easy If You Have A Junk 400 Or 450 Lying Around!

Not sure about MD blocks, but the chassis serial number prefix is FDBK. I would assume the engine uses the same code.

IMO, the seller is mistaken.

Thanks for the info. I will go back and and look for the ID #s stamped in the block. Tractor starts and runs well, has like new rear rubber, IH wide front, fenders, pulley and 1 set of weights. The minuses are the power steering leaks fluid pretty fast, the belly pump needs repair, and the radiator has a small leak but the fluid in the radiator is clean no traces of oil or sludge while engine is running. Seller is asking 2750.00

2750 isn't too far off. It might be a hair strong, but within 10% if it has great tires and runs really well on both sides.

I got the #'s off the engine block stamped above the injection pump F??KM 17564 and no other #,s or letters appear up there. Then there is a raised number on the block just to the rear of the injection pump 7.25T Serial number on the chassis tag reads FDBK 254352.

Well the 5 digit engine serial is very early. Also, that would be "FDBKM" as the motor prefix is the same as the chassis except with an M added.

However T and 254xxx both indicate 1951. Confusing. Does it read like "7*25*T" ???
