FARMALL F20 STARTER

I WOULD LIKE TO PUT A STARTER ON MY F20 BUT CAN NOT SEEM TO FIND THE BELLHOUSING. SO I HAVE DECIDED TO MAKE MY OWN BY CUTTING AND WELDING A PIECE IN THE BELLHOUSING I HAVE. I WORK IN A VERY GOOD FAB AND MACHINE SHOP I DO NOT BELIEVE THIS WILL BE A PROBLEM. THE WELD SHOP DOES CAST WELDING QUITE OFTEN. SO MY PROBLEM IS WHAT STARTER TO USE. I UNDERSTAND THE ORINGAL SETUP WAS A 1930 CHEVY STARTER. THESE ARE A LITTLE HARD TO COME BY. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

I rember seeing them mounted on the belt pully and other than the org equipment would it be simpler??Bud and Stinky.

There was an F12 at Red Power that had the bell housing welded up like you describe. I think they had used the nose piece off another starter. I'd go with a Farmall H or M starter. An M ring gear is pretty close too. Just machine the flywheel to fit. Just make sure whatever you do the starter motor turns the right direction,

Start with the ring gear. Once you have that you can determine what type of drive you will need. Find a location that will work for the starter. If you want to mount it from the front you will need a clockwise starter. If you mount it from the rear it needs to be a counterclockwise starter. If you use a DelcoRemy clone you can build it to whatever specs you need.

WHY ARE YOU YELLING AT US?

Anyway, I have seen a setup using a small flexplate from a Chevy 4 cylinder. It was adapted to mount on the flex coupler between the engine and tranny. Had a nice cover fabbed up and put over it. Starter was mounted on a simple angle iron bracket under the frame rails. Best part was it used cheap Chevy starters.

If looks arent that important just fasten a flywheel from a car engine to the drive between the tranny then mount the starter to match easy to do.Ive seen this done a couple times.

Oh am I gonna take crap for this next question. Why put a starter on? My F-20 is probably one of my easiest starting tractors, and that includes the Letter series with starters on them. 1/4 crank and she is running.

however, if that is what you want to do, go for it. The flexplate from a car is the one I have seen the most when the original housings aren't available.

I just made one for my F-30. I did it just like you mentioned. I coped the original flywheel housing, made a flange for the starter mounting, set the gear lash, tacked and welded it all up. I have done a lot of cast welding and the one thing I have noticed is these castings on the F-series are very brittle. Take the chill out of the cast and weld a very little at a time. The best thing to do is to stick the housing in a forge after you have it tacked up then weld it. I guess your gas grill may work also.
Good luck to ya.

Yep, well maintained carb and mag and they start easy. Kinda a point of pride for me to just non-chalantly roll one to life in front of the doubters.
