carb needle valve keeps sticking

H farmall needle valve that the float pushes against keeps sticking. Been fighting it off and on for over four years now, usually just give up and forget about it till the next year. I take it all apart, clean it, shine the valve up with fine emery cloth, works half-azzed on the bench all tore apart. Put it back together figuring the gas will lubricate it a bit more, works ok for a while then the same thing. Any suggestions? This is a supposedly "professional" rebuilt carb.

Someone gave me a little tip and just tryed it on my M and so far its working good. The needle and seat fit to snug togather. You can either file or sand just a tad the 3 sides of the needle or you can do what I did is to measure the seat and take and open it up one size. The one in my M measured .250 and I opened it to a letter F bit thats .257. Just make sure not to go to deep though you dont want to hit were the needle seats. Paul

I might add you need the little clip that goes on the float to pull the needle down too.

Ahhh, don't have the clip to pull the needle down, just relies on gravity. Makes sense though. Thanks dudes!!

You don't have a clip because there never was one in there. The H and M carburetors do not use such a thing. Never did. And while we're on the subject, never use emery cloth to polish the needle. In fact, never use anything to polish that needle because it does not polished.

The best thing you can do now is to get a new needle and seat and clean both thoroughly with aerosol carb cleaner BEFORE installing. Also, make double sure the float height is correct, the float does not leak, and make sure the float is not bent so that it rubs the sides of the carb. It is not rocket science. Just follow the directions in the carb kit and DO NOT second guess the engineers that designed that carburetor.

IH needle/seats don't have the little clip.

But yeah, the emery cloth RUINED the needle. It's much smoother from the factory than you can make it with emery cloth. All you did was give it "teeth" to stick even worse.

Do what rusty suggests, and get a new needle/seat from the dealer.
