What's the deal with Farmall Oil pumps? Like Super A -140

I figured that you can replace the whole unit like you can with a water pump, but I don't see one anywhere.

Does my oil pump need to be rebuilt? Do I need to replace the gears? I see Case IH has some parts listed on their website, but I am confused as to what exactly I need to do to refurbish the oil pump.

To know what you need you need a bit of knowledge and to spend some time measuring your current components. Your most likely issue is that the end plate has warped causing excessive clearance at the end of the gears but you won't know if this is really your issue until you measure it. Best of luck. Sam

My oil pump worked. I just want to freshen it up for the engine rebuild. I thought working on Farmalls was going to be easy and straightforward. The lack of new parts for these machines has really puzzled me.

First let me say these machines were built to last !! So in a lot of cases parts do not need to be replaced. Yes when we rebuild a car motor we usually put in a new oil pump.Haha I have parts on my 53 cub that have been rebuilt too many times to count . LOL

I do not know where you are looking but I can get any part I need for my 140.
What the other gentleman was trying to say is that in almost all cases there is nothing wrong with the oil pump , but the SCREEN that goes over the bottom gets warped . Do a search for low oil pressure on here .
So check that screen out before you buy an oil pump !

In additiona to Gene, I can also get you hooked up with parts. Don't be so quick to replace parts that may not be bad. I have 8 of the letter series tractors, and only 1 of them suffered from the warped pump plate. All other have good oil pressure. These are not like cars. They are not high RPM and high compression. They behave and react well to clean oil, clean air, and clean fuel.

Not only that, working on or replacing an oil pump only requires dropping the oil pan which is NOT a huge effort on these.

If you have specific parts you are looking for, ping Gene or myself, and we can get you setup. Also, this site is a great source of new parts for consumables.

PS if it had good oil pressure before you started working on this, no need to do anything except clean the pickup screen

Just a small correction to GriffNC. The screen can become plugged. It is the pump faceplate that warps. 2 different things. Screen gets cleaned. Faceplate gets resurfaced and new gasket. CIH still has the pump gaskets.
