Farmall cub magneto

I have a 1948 Cub with a J4 magneto that hasen"t been used for several years. The engine turns
freely, and I have installed new points, condenser, cap, etc in the magneto.I can"t get any fire from the points.Could this be a sign of a bad mag coil or something else? Thanks for any help.

What all did you have apart when you changed points and the condensor. Did you have the front cover off where the gears are. Does the rotor line up with the tower when it fires you mite have got the rotor out of time with the tower. You caould also be 180- out of time when you replaced the mag.

as usual, Gene is right on the money. If you didn't get the rotor timed correctly, you will get no spark.

Is the wire to the points worn through and grounding?

could be a bad coil, but other things to check first.

Cub electrical service manual can be viewed at the link below. Mag section starts on Page 4.

Did you pull the mag off the engine? If you did and didn't note where the rotor was pointing
your mag may be out of time. To check to see if it's out of time bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Then remove the cap on the mag and see where your rotor is pointing. It should be pointing to the No1 plug tower.

Before you do this check, rub your new points with some 320 wet or dry and then see if you have fire to your plugs. Make sure your points are set at .020" on the high point of the lobe. Hal

first check i'd do is pull the wire out of the cap and check fire to ground about 1/8". if you have good spark there then all those previous directions apply. this check applies to coil, condensor, points and coil wire. good luck!
