Farmall A axle questions

I hear a loud clicking sound, once each rotation of the left rear wheel. Jacked up and in neutral -- no noise with rotation. Any ideas?

Also, on the right underside of the axle there is a 1/2 inch hole that leaked a lot of oil when the right side jacked up. Should it have a plug? I couldn't see one in the parts manual.

Thanks Guys.

My guess is that a bearing in the hub has gone bad and with weight on the tire and rotating its making noise. pull the tire and hub assembly off to make sure. On the axle meaning the wide front tube? or on the hub or spindle?

Before doing anything else, loosen & then re-tighten the wheel mounting bolts. While in there, look VERY closely at the welds on the rim. Don't do any welding without taking the tube out or at least sliding a piece of thin metal between the weld area & the tube.

Parts manual shows "differential shaft housing with two dowels". Are they supposed to plug the holes?

robably the drain hole. Tilting the tractor with the jack probably allowed oil that had already leaked past a bad differential shaft seal to get out. If it isn't a big leak, I wouldn't do anything about it.

Your noise is probably a loose rim at the wheel center, loose wheel center at the axle or loose wheel weight. Make sure all bolts are tight.

Jim. Dowels are meant to precisely line up two parts, while being fastened by bolts. Dowels are not meant to plug or seal anything.
Your differential shaft housing (the part with two trumpet shaped ends) attaches
to the transmission and rear end case on the left hand side, and
to the drop housing on the right hand side.
On either side there is an oil seal and one or both may be shot. (One seal is in the differential carrier in the rear end case and the other in the drop housing, between the differential gear and the brake drum.)

The dowels listed are metal dowels used to align the housing with the face of the tranny. I'd have to look at the parts book to be sure, but one of those dowels may also serve to anchor your brake band.

Tho hole on the underside in intended to be left open. It's a way for condensation to drain out, as well as to let you know when you have a seal leaking. The rate at which it's leaking should guide whether or not you'll want to replace the seal.

The only dowel-like plugs I'm aware of around the finals and shaft housings are small corks used to fill two holes on the upper side of the left shaft housing on the rear of B/BNs. Can't remember if there are similar holes with cork plugs on the right side of theB/BNs or the A series.
