The generator quit charging on my Super A.

When it quit, it started making a sound like chirping birds. I'm sure the noise indicates whatever the failure is, bearings, brushes?

Motor test fails.

Grounding the F-terminal test also fails.

Ok, first I thought you were doing that cell phone thingy.

Sounds like bushings to me........(even though I can't hear it)

Probably the brushes, or what's left of them, but while you have it apart, replace the bearing and bushing also.

I took it apart this afternoon. Commutator looks pretty nasty. Bearing is a little loose, bushing seems okay.

Would bad bushing/bearing cause it to stop charging?

Generator fails the "motor" test. It'll spin, but just barely.

If the bushing is bad enough to allow the armature to touch the pole shoes it will stop charging. The metal to metal contact upsets the magnetic lines of force causing it to stop charging. As long as the armature is not damaged from the contact you will most likely be alright if you replace the bushing. Check to make sure there is no continuity between the commutator and the armature shaft/plates. Shorts in the armature windings can be tested with a growler.

The bushing is actually almost TIGHT on the shaft, like it's swelled.

There is no play whatsoever on the bushing end, so it's definitely not worn out.

Turns out it was the regulator after all. Grounded the F terminal again, and the ammeter pegged. Luckily I had a spare on hand.

New regulator, and it's charging again.
