Changing the camshaft gear on my Super C

So I've decided to replace the camshaft gear on my Super C, since the steel hydraulic pump gear ripped 3/4 of each tooth off of it. The engine still runs smoothly...I only discovered the carnage while investigating the non working hydraulic pump. there were no other symptoms. What am I up against here? It looks like I have to unbolt the entire front of the tractor from the engine block, to allow me to get the crankshaft pulley off, which it looks like I need to do to get the cover off that will expose the camshaft gear. Am I on-base here so far? How does the camshaft gear come off the camshaft? I was thinking that I could support the tractor with some blocking just behind the oilpan, and then unbolt the front of the tractor from the engine, leaving the engine hanging out in space ahead of the blocking. Is this okay to do? I don't want to break anything by putting too much stress on something. I'm calling upon the collective wisdom of you folks here :)

Yes thats what to do . Pulling the cam gear mite be tricky but the correct puller and maybe some heat and you will get it.

I've never been inside a Farmall engine before. How does the camshaft gear attach to the camshaft? is it a pressed fit? Would it be better to loosen the rocker arms, pop off the side cover, pull out the lifters, and just remove the camshaft and do it on the bench?

I would pull the camshaft and have it pressed off and the new gear pressed on. You need to make sure you have all the timing marks aligned
as shown in this pic. Do this before pulling the cam. You need a good manual as this gives the procedure to do this. Hal

The cam gears were pressed on at the factory before installing the cam. Since it has hydraulics only a forged gear will need to be used, not cast iron. Don't beleive you can replace the gear without removing the camshaft as it is a very tight fit. The cam was installed at the factory after dropping in the lifters while the engine block was inverted.

(quoted from post at 12:21:18 07/04/11) may sound crazy, but put the camshaft in the freezer for a few hours, and heat the cam gear a bit. then assemble very quickly. that will cause the cam to shrink very slghtly, and the heat will expend the gear hub. when everything comes back to normal temp, it will be very TIGHT

How about just take it to a machine shop?

It's a pressed fit, unless it has a lot of wear like mine. Mine just slipped right off because the little keyhole had so much extreme back and forth pressure applied to it that it just slipped right off during disassembly.
