Super a hot or not?

Hey guys, I flushed out the radiator on my super a. I pull a cultivator behind, actually no matter what I pull, it gets hot. When I take the radiator cap off, it just bubbles a little bit down below in the radiator. It does not overflow, put when i take the cap off it just sounds like its bubbling. Is ths a big deal? I dont want to overwork it.

Thanks, Cole

Hot is a relative term. These old girls were designed to run hot to burn distillate. A thermosyphon system will "gurgle" a bit as normal operation. Do you have a temp guage on it? Hard to determine if you are operating at "normal" temp or if it is truly "hot".

sounds like you need to have a rad shop do a soak on it. flushing does nothing once the cores are corroded.they have a caustic solution that removes all corrosion. should be able to see how the cores look inside , if they are plugging off or not. a hand held digital thermometer is handy for checking temps, but not everyone has one. they do get fairly warm, when worked but not that the coolant level drops as you say.

Your block is somewhat plugged. There are holes at the bottom of the block where the sleeve seats the size of a nickle and they get plugged stopping the natural flow of the coolant. You could drain the coolant and fill with vinegar and run that for a little while and drain. The best way is to remove the radiator and then the lower outlet. mNow with stiff wire and compressed air you can get those passages cleaned. With a lite you can see where the holes are. I would then back flush with pressure so the junk will get loosened up and flushed out. I have Torn down a bunch of those engines and always find junk at the bottom around the base of the sleeves and plugging them shut. Your problem is not the radiator but in the block. Your coolant temp when hard use will run around 175 or so. Iv never used it but wouldnt CLR and some of that stuff for dissolving rust work with a few flushes. Just telling you my findings after years of playing with those engines.

I've always thought CLR SHOULD work, but never did it myself either. It won't wreck stuff in the bathroom so I can't see how it could wreck cast in the block.
I would guess the flusher solution at (insert farm/auto parts store here) would do the same thing. It is just a weak acid. Vinegar is the same thing also...just another weak acid.

If it is not pressurized, and there is no overflow once the excess coolant is expelled you don't have a problem. If it is pressurized and it is coming out the overflow and you have a new radiator cap, you have corrosion somewhere, probably where geneb says. Thermosiphon always gurgles.
