Funny think happened to me today looking for parts......

I was telling an old family friend about my project and he got his son to drive me to show me this:

It's a 140 that was used on a big farm. I think it was running when they parked it, but something was done to the gears and the tractor was way to fast. They said they only had one worker that could handle the tractor and that the tractor could do 25mph when they parked it.

The gas tank has no dings in it and it's in really good shape. . It has a left side cultivator with tool bar, it just does not have the lift arm. I have a right side cultivator for my Super A, but not the left. It has a 1 point fast hitch, but it doesn't have the lift arms. The helper spring is in great shape. The rockshaft lift rod is in great shape. The front end is in good shape with no dings and even the block doesn't look like it has the infamous freeze crack or the tell tale sign of slow leaking anti-freaze.

Fellas I have just been given a parts tractor that I can use for My Super A. I just have to remove the tree that has grown into the 1 point hitch and clear some debris to get it.

Have fun...

My 140 had a road gear that we never used. I tried it once... quite a wild ride.
Maybe thse two gears in the trans are touching.

(quoted from post at 19:50:12 07/01/11) Ha that's neat. If you get into the rearend post some pics. I wanna see what they might have done to the gearing

Whatever happened to it it was unintentional to make it go that fast, but I heard the story, then one of the other family members came in and they asked him why they parked it and he said it was too damn fast that it was geared wrong. Towards the end of it's life it was used for tobacco spraying and that was it. One of them remembers pulling the radiator off and he said he might have taken the right side cultivator and left side lift arm for another tractor. They have so many machines that they just parked it and forgot about it.

A lot of farmers still use 140's and super A's on a limited basis for some of the migrant workers to pull tobacco sleds and irrigation pipe, but most farmers I know phased out Farmalls for cultivating. Now farmers are not even using the migrant workers to pull tobacco anymore. They have fancy machines that do it. So they are quickly being phased out. I know one farmer that has a Super A and a 140 that looks like all they use it for is gardens. One for making a raised bed, the other for cultivating and that's about it. It's all John Deeres now with widened axles to go over two rows at a time.

I really have no intention of restoring the tractor, just parting it. If the rear or tranny is like that it is of no use to me, but like I said earlier. It's got a nice un-pinged gas tank. A front end with no damage. A good looking rockshaft rod and helper spring. It may even have a few other things that are worth salvaging.

140s haven't been used for tobacco cultivation for a few years. One farmer close by who raises hundreds of acres of tobacco used a huge fleet (probably 15) and they could cover a field in a few passes. He has fazed out his 140s now and uses 274s. He cultivates once with the Internationals, then uses his big John Deeres that cover 4 rows at a time.

(quoted from post at 12:29:49 07/04/11) hey grape drink, there are a few parts id like to buy from you from that tractor...emails open.

Andy

If you look at the pics there's a ton of poison oak. I need to get permission to get in there with some round up, then we need to cut the tree out that is growing into the sprayer attachment and 1-point hitch. A lot of those parts I'm going to use for my tractor, but I checked my email and I didn't see any messages.

Grape,

I also would like to purchase several parts from you that are on the tractor. Please email me at [email protected] and we'll discuss it. I might even have some parts you need that aren't on the tractor such as the rest of the 1 point hitch, etc. Maybe we could work out some trades or I could just buy some parts from you. I'll be lookin for the email!
