Farmall 706 Alt. Light stays on

The Alt.light stays on most of the time. When i first start the tractor the light will sometimes go out but after a few minutes the light will come on and stay on. I noticed that the bottom points on the regulator and not staying closed, if i push the closed they will stay closed and the light will go out. I replaced the regulator but its still doing the same thing.

Hi Scott,

First order of business is to make darned sure that the belt isn't slipping. If you can turn that alternator fan by hand, it's too loose.

The regulator isn't the problem as it isn't getting enough juice from the alternator to keep it pulled in.

If the belt is good and tight, the problem probably lies in the alternator. Those early alternators were weak in that they would loose a positive diode (light stays on with key off) or a leg of the stator.

Open it up and see if a third of the stator windings have turned black.

Russ is right about the brushes. They get worn & get cockeyed in the holders. While you have it apart, use an ohmmeter & check for continuity between all 3 windings. Check for shorts [grounded condition] between the 3 leads on windings & frame that the windings are on. Should read infinity on all 3 leads to ground.

Continuity should be 0 from lead to lead on all 3 windings.

Have you used a volt meter to check the charging voltage across your battery terminals. If your're only seeing 12 volts your alternator probably needs to be rebuilt. It may be cheaper
to buy a rebuilt alternator from your local auto parts store and they can test your old alternator. Hal
