Unloading DEAD Tractors

Hi i am a mechanic student at a tech school in Wi . i have stumbled upon two old Farmalls one being a H and one being a 560d . I plan on purchasing a 25 foot gooseneck deckover to haul these and hopefully many other project tractors in my life time but my biggest concern is how would i devise a way to get these horses off . i have been thinking of unstrapping them and hooking a chain to a tree and pulling them off . all would be easy if i still worked for a big dairy farm and just used the tele handler to lift them off . Please let me know of your ideas

Being that they are tricycle front end. That may not be the safest way to do it. you would be better off pushing them off by hand and having someone use the brakes on the tractor.

Thank You i will try to heed to your advice . i am kinda hoping that the H is just a stuck starter so later if i keep purchasing these tractors i have some way off getting these old girls off . I hope i dont fill up the 40x50 machine shed in too big of a hurry

Make a push-pole. Mine is 21/2" X 10', safest way to control loading or unloading a non running tractor without a winch.

seems how at the time being i dont have a runner what about using the winch on the trailer to provide support while a come along to a tree to provide winchin action any thoughts ?

This is how I load dead tractors. I use the winch and the snatch block to unload. I use a short chain on the back of my trailer, hook the chain to snatch block run cable back thur the snatch block, then to front of tractor and pull the tractor off. I use this winch on all 3 of my trailers

PS: I also use a tow strap to hook to front of tractor and back of trailer to keep the tractor from running off as it comes down off of the ramps. I also use the winch on my truck as I have a receiver on the front as well as the rear.

If the engines are not locked up you can both load and unload them with the starter and use 1st gear. Ya you can not hold the button down for more them 30-45 seconds or so but you can do it that way I know I have done many of them that way. It does help if you have 2 people so that one guy can block the tires when your not spinning it over. Once you get it rolling when unloading there is a good chance you can just drive it off being careful that is

would it be possible to get a picture or something of how you do that i understand how you do it but its still a little hard with out seeing it in action for example when looking at trucks online usee the same as the pics but u cant see it sorry that was meant towards keith

You will. Barns are never big enough.

By the way, I've used a come along or chainfall many times to load non-running tractors. The going down? Get some help, push it, and then ride it down, with it in gear and foot on the clutch so you can release it if you have to to stop. Works well with smaller tractors. With that 560? Pull it off with a buddy's pickup, and again, ride it down with foot on clutch and brakes. Done it many times. -Andy

Get the 30 ft trailer if you plan on using the trailer a lot. But as far as loading dead equipment When every possible I get a forklift to just load them if the forklift is not there at unloading I just drag them off with another tractor or truck.

I've got a 14k 25' and don't regret getting the "short" trailer for a minute. Buying a trailer to haul two tractors once can get a bit pricey, have you considered having somebody haul them? I can do it if you are in SE WI.
A winch is the best way to load and unload dead tractors. Usually if they are dead the brakes and other stuff doesn't work either. I am running my winch off a battery on the trailer, but it would work WAY better if I spent the money and hooked it up to my pickup. I can do an M with a snatch block alright, but I tried to do my pickup and it was a no go.

I am considering buyin a tra%ler to keep being able to get tractors when I want to be able too. But if you wanna shoot me a estimate from campbellsport to plain

If you are *backing* the tractor off, do NOT let the clutch out against a dead engine to stop yourself. The tractor could flip over on top of you.

You'll have a winch on the front of the trailer, right? Okay, park the trailer facing uphill and let the tractor roll off, controlling it with the winch.

If you don't have any hills, you can chain the tractor to a tree and pull it off, but use the winch to keep the tractor from running away... Without that winch, as soon as the tractor hits the ramps, it will roll right down and into the tree!

Spend a little more $ and buy an industrial battery. They're not that much more than a regular battery.

I just bought a couple of surplus tank batteries for $70.00 ea. I needed a couple of really good batteries to start my Motor home with an 8-71 DD. I'm going to use one of them to run my winch

From what I have seen it is just not the same. I have run it with a yellow top Optima. That is a pretty good battery and the system still isn't ideal. I have never set my system up to have the truck charge it when I am moving, but that would be pretty nice. I usually just throw the smart charger on it before I leave.

Cambellsport/Plain is a little out of my reach. I usually charge the fuel price per loaded mile. If there is a ton of screwing around (like loading dead tractors) I sometimes put 10% on that.
