656 smoking

my 656 is running better now but is smoking bad and in a few hours of light work such as raking hay it will use about a 1/4 gallon of oil. is that a sign that it needs more major work? and if so what kind? also my uncle has a farmall H that will start but will not run very long as in maybe 100 feet then will stall, sometimes it will fire again other times it won"t. does it need plugs, wires and such? thanks Andy

sounds like the 656 needs new piston rings,
not a hard job just takes time...
the h needs carb work but sounds like you have a restricton in fuel line somewhere, maybe the sediment bowl, maybe the screen in the carb, maybe something in the tank...good luck

The H is running out of gas just see where its blocked not hard to do. Its not plugs and points check the fuel line, sediment bowl, screen andsomewhere you will find out the gas just does a small trickle and then find out where.

656 burning oil. likely suspects = piston rings or valve guides. Do a compression test. If compression is within spec you most likely need a valve job. If compression is low, squirt some oil in each cylinder and re-do the compression test. If the compression rises, the problem is rings.
'H' starving for fuel. Keep in mind the 'H' has gravity feed fuel system. Any restriction will create fuel starving. Check lines, filter bowl, carb and tank outlet for blockage. Do not use an add on in-line filter. They cannot flow through well enough for non-pressurized system.

Not familiar with your tractor, But has it been setting long? Is it diesel?. Just wondering if maybe you have a stuck ring. Anyways, before I replaced any rings, I would take it and work it HARD just to see if that helps, maybe put it on a dyno. ONLY if you keep an eye on the oil level, maybe check in 20 min increments.

If it is burning oil that bad then i guess that she has scored the liners worse then i could see thru the spark plug holes when i looked at her. As for putting sleeves in her it is a job as they have to be pulled with a puller and PRESSED IN . Give me a call when ya have a chance .
