M carb giving me fits

I"m reassembling a 1950 M which I stripped for painting. When I open the gas valve at the tank the carb fills and spills. I"ve checked the float needle valve and it"s free and floats set about right. Can"t find documentation telling me how many turns out to take the fuel needle.

The fuel needle has nothing to do with that problem. Screw it back till it seats, then turn it a full 3 turns out and leave it alone!!

Your problem IS the needle valve and seat. There is a speck of rust or other foreign material in there that is preventing the needle from completely stopping the flow of fuel. You don't necessarily need to replace the needle and seat, but you do need to completely remove it and give it a thorough cleaning.

Rusty is correct. If the needle is all brass, look to see if it has a wear groove in it. If so it needs to be replaced! Jim
