450 Carb Question

low screw which is in/on the float bowl is the man jet and the down pointing one up high is the idle. By the way that pretty much holds true on any tractor carb the main jet if it has an adjustment set low and is in the float bowl area on them all and the idle is up at the top close to where it bolts to the manifold

Thanks, but I do not have a "down pointing" adjustment screw. The only screw that is angled at all, is pointing up and forward. Not sure that matters, but I have yet to read anything that really sounds like it is talking about the same carb I have.

You may have an aftermarket carb and on those all bets are off because they can be made odd and not fit the norm. A picture would go a long ways on one like that. O a true IH 450 carb the main jet sits at the bottom of the float bowl and is horizontal and has a big nut sort of thing a small one then the adjustment screw if I am remembering it right been a while since I have messed with my friends 450

The up and forward screw is for the idle jet, the one above it is for the idle speed. Main jet is as Old says. On the Super M/400/450, max power is with the main jet screw 5 turns out, it can be turned in maybe 1-1.5 turns for lighter loads. In other words don't try to adjust the main jet in the usual "in until rough, out until smooth". It won't work.

(quoted from post at 07:09:22 06/25/11) Can anyone tell me which screws do what on a 450 carb?

TC2, maybe it's time for you to purchase an owners manual for your tractor. The various carburetor adjustments are outlined in great detail, and it even has pictures.

Thanks, but the manual I have for my M says that the idle mixture screw is on the rear of the carb facing down, which is what got me in this mess in the first place.

If it says that, and it is an M manual you do not have an IH manual. Mine is correct and has the all adjustments in the right place. You need to get the correct manual. The carb on the H has the main adjustment facing down.
