Rochester gas gague float change...

Ok, before I break the glass or bend something, how's this dumb gague come apart (I'm trying to lay off the excessive force, for now)? I've tried a few things & just can't get the gague to unscrew from the gas cap. There are threads, so it must be screwed on. Penetrating oil hasn't helped so far. What am I missing? Am I even headed in the right direction to change the float?

Thanks,
Mike

I have never tried it but I think you unsolder the fitting at the bottom of the wire legs. I'd be staying away from the gas cap and gauge (note spelling).

If you don't want to do that, cut the cork lengthwise, install the halves on the spiral, and glue together. Or you could use several tie-wraps to hold it together.

I have never heard the term before. Is it like the thing in the picture or is it some other type of device? I'm learning something new for the day.

Wow, I did spell like a putz! I thought something didn't look quite right about that post. Anyhow, the replacement float is a new rubber one with the brass grommet that operates the actuator for the needle. I don't know if I want to cut all of that in half. The fitting holding the wire legs seems to be crimped on, so I might be able to solder the fitting after I get it off. I'll give that a try.

Thanks,
Mike

Yep, same one. Rochester is/was the manufacturer of these gauges. I think they make everything but these gauges, now. I think it was OEM that carried them until?????? Well, I couldn't tell ya. I thought they still carried them until I ordered the replacement float. Didn't see them. It took me this long to save up for one & hey quit selling the darn things. Sheesh!! I checked Rochester's site & I can't find anything about them. They have every style of gauge but that one. Oh well, maybe I'll score one on my next parts tractor. :v)

I think you can buy a very similar Rochester gauge for domestic oil tanks. It has the same size hex shape but is attached to a 1.5" or 2" pipe thread. The face is only slightly different. Obviously no IH logo.

Rochester makes everything but! Something tells me they might have the parts floating around from the OEM contract yet. I'm supposed to call them about a sending unit/gauge combo for my buddies chopper anyhow, sooo I guess I'll have to call them next week. DANG it! I hate office chair time!! I ain' a pencil pusher, I'm a tractor jockey!! >:v(

There is 2 brass pins that go through the metal portion of the cap into the aluminum threads. You will probably have to drill them out, but when they are removed, the drop for the cork slides right out of the top portion of the gauge.
