H electrical

I've had a few problems with the electricals on my H. First I got 2 new front lights that, after I painted everything, aren't grounding right. If I solder some wire to the bulb housing and drill a hole under the light housing would grounding it to the chasis ground where the battery grounds be acceptable? I know they work because I can take them off and mount one at a time on the back and they work so I figure it's the ground. Also my amp gauge is messed up I'm pretty sure. It charges because the battery hasn't died yet and when I turn the lights on (the back light is the only one that comes on) it shows charge or discharge. Depends how she feels that day I guess ha. Do you guys think it's the gauge or my wiring? or both? When I took it apart to rewire it was wired in a way that I haven't seen on any diagram. Appartently the lights had brights and dims then the 2 charging levels. Thanks for any help

Just curious - you're saying it's a bad ground because when you swap the light to the back of the tractor it works...

You HAVE established that you're getting power to the front wire, right?

Either way, unless i'm missunderstanding you - I wouldn't get fancy with drilling and soldering wires, can't you just sand clear a spot where the light's mounting nut tightens against?

The light bar (that they attach to) might be insulated from the steering post use a jumper cable or similar and find the ground fault. It is not necessary to go back to the main ground at all.
The grounding issue with the steering post/lights has an affect on the charge factor, as the light box grounds the gen field making charge happen. With a ground fault it will fail, or be intermittent. The light switch has control of the charge rate as follows: on L it has a wire resistor in the field grounding circuit causing low charge.
In all other positions the gen is full fielded, through the light switch.
The lights are completely separate in the switch.
I hope this helps. Jim

Yes I have taken the wire from the front lights and hooked it to the back mount and used it on the lights so I know it's gettin power to the wire and I have sanded some spots down to where it would ground the the light bar. I think Jim hit the nail on the head. I'll have to give it a try. Thanks fo your replys

I solder a wire to the light socket and then to the inside of the light housing. This eleminates that brass grounding clip that never works when they get old. From there do as others suggested to get a good ground. No need to run ground wire all the way but I have done that a few times also.
