Hello, I'm on the hunt for a 460 diesel and was looking for some info before I go too far. Good points, bad points, and general things to look out for. How bad are these guys to find parts for? There really aren't many/any around here so I'm figuring I'll have to haul one from somewhere else and want to know all I can before I go too far. Many thanks, Sam

I was always told the 3 most important things about buying or selling are location , Location and LOCATION . If you don"t tall where you are at how can anyone help you ?
I have a 460 diesel that I"m going to be getting rid of , haven"t decided whether to part it out or sell whole . You may be to far away as I am in Central Oh .

My apologies, I am located in Eastern Canada (Nova Scotia) but I had figured more on getting information than to actually find a tractor through this board. However I would be interested to hear about yours as I'd been thinking I'd have to travel to Wisconsin or a similar distance to find what I'm looking for. Many thanks, Sam

They have a bad rep about starting and will stink up the barn before you can get out of it.Hard to get off and on but they run very cheap once you get all the fires lit! A very good tractor for pulling wagons on the road with the TA and will go like a scalded dog!!!!!!!!!!Im in central Mi and i wish someone else had min e!! Bud.

Back when these were built, diesels of this size were more popular in Canada than in the US... I think you'd have better luck up there.

I'm not looking hard for one but would love to have one. I think for what I need it would be a perfect size to fit into my small operation. Glad you started this cause I have no idea on the good/bad/ugly on the 460. I know that the 560 was a good tractor.

Good tractor for the most part. They are "hard to start" because they require a minute or two of glow plugs to start even on the hottest day. If one or two of the glow plugs aren't working they will smoke you out until it warms up - winter starting is indeed hard and a block heater is a must - but being in Canada you are probably used to that.

Biggest draw back is that they are now 50 years old and have already had a life of work behind them. Finding a good one could be a chore.

I would look for a late model one as there were many improvements over the years. Too many to list all but far as engine, injection pump and injection nozzles were changed and they have to be in good physical condition to start good. With any mass production piece of equipment, tolerences with in a given range is what makes one a good one and the other one possibly a lemon. When it comes to crankcase cyl bores, piston height over the block and valve recession in the head is where the starting problems really get you on these tractors. Problem is, IH never gave any specs for piston height for instance and only gave valve recession specs in a service bulletin that was issued several years after tractors were introduced so when it came to rebuilding them it was a difficult for mechanics and or machine shops to get them to maximum performance except by trial and error. Just for the record John Deere was ever poorer when it came to those same specs.

Thanks for all of the great info so far. I know they weren't a perfect tractor and had their idiosyncrasies (starting esp.) but they can't be any worse than the gas start diesels (of which I have 3). I tend to gravitate towards the weird and unusual and this tractor won't likely be a serious worker. My girlfriend loves the look of the -60 series and I love diesels and wouldn't mind something similar to but less thirsty than the 300 I have. So I guess the hard part is finding the right one for me. Someone mentioned late model ones being better (and I believe I read somewhere about a difference in wrist pin sizes), what qualifies as a 'late model'? There was a 1960 I had my eye on. I'm ideally looking for something with a fast hitch, T/A, PTO, power steering, remotes, wide front, and clamshell style fenders which might be a tall order but a guy can dream can't he? Is the T/A in these tractors basically the same as the one in a 300/400 style tractor or had they changed by then? Many thanks, Sam

Ttacforsam, I have a 460 diesel that is my sole tractor with the wide front as u suggested. O ly This.g she doesnt have that you mentioned was the clam shell fenders. Actually no fenders as I'm looking for some flat top fenders but the clam shells are much easier to find. I got this tractor a few years ago and decided to fix it up and actually refinished it This spring. I took every piece off , cleaned it and set them aside and dove into another one. Painted, and then reassembled it all again. I've had a few hydraulic isswues with it but nothing serious and I replaced the hydraulic pump just to make sure it was a good one in there. It has power steering and man is that nice, the pto is strong as I use a 7'tiller and this tractor just eats it up with it, its a joy to run. I'm probably gonna kick myself when its gone and its not for sale locally but when I saw your post I thought I'd offer it to you. I drove past another tractor today that I've had my eye on and if I had a buyer for mine, I would consider buying that one.
Don't know if you're even ready to get your 460 but I'm in Michigan, near Traverse City area. Hi e it some thought and if you want some pictures of mine, let me know, otherwise, good luck with your search. I think the 460 is a great Tractor, I sure like mine. By the way, mine is a 1958. Good Luck.
Tod.

I've not really got to the point of seriously looking yet but if you fancy sending me some pictures of yours anyway that would be great. You never know if the right opportunity came along. Many thanks, Sam
