Farmall governor help!

With his H pulsating, (hunting for the governed speed)dad is 1/2 way through changing the gov.
Coming out was easy, going in.......not. Is there a trick to getting the helix gears to mesh?

Hopefully this will cure the pulsating / dieseling problem that only happens when just off idle and not under much of a load.

Leave the cover off of the governor while installing. That way you can turn the shaft by hand to line up the gears.

The pulsating (rapid speeding up and slowing down) can be caused by a defective governor, or a governor that is improperly adjusted. I have no idea what you are describing as "dieseling", but dieseling has nothing to do with the governor, and in fact, I've never experienced any kind of dieseling in an H.

I worked on 2cycle Detroits quite a fewe years, and they had a habit, when cold, to bounce on the governor causing a pulsing idle till they warmed up.
Pop's worked on Jd and Farmall pretty much most of his life, (he's 83) but never had to replace a gov of this style. He and I have tried (with the cover off)to get the gears to mesh, but can't seem to "wiggle" it in when the teeth begin to engage. ......Just gettin to be an SOB and pushing our combined short tempers to the hammer stage!

Did you by chance install the governor gear backwards?

The governor on that H is not even remotely related to that of a Detroit diesel. Totally different animals.

Worn out pins and weights can cause surging in engine RPMs. Too hot of heat range spark plugs can cause dieseling (running on after the ignition is turned off) if not given a chance to cool down from a load.

I think the different govenor may help your hunting problem, but if it doesn't, your problem may be link from gov to carb or carburetor itself. What it is doing is actually making an over correction to speed and IH played with the throttle plate angle on some engines to over come this problem. The trick is to get a sensitive govenor with maybe one bounce and then it settles out. You will note a number on some throttle plates that designate the off set angle. Also, make sure the throttle plate is not in back wards as the edges of plate have to align with bore when closed. I have a surge buttom on one of my H tractors. I don't know if it came from factory with it on or if Dad was having a problem and the dealer installed it. You will notice that little square spot on rear of govenor, that is made for a surge button if all else fails. Very few tractors have it installed. Far as getting gov back on, all I can say is that some times they can give you grief but never had one that would not eventually go on. Guess I have had several hundred off over the years. Far as dieseling on an H, well, most likely idleing too fast at shut down with some hot spots in chamber or spark plug tips.

Mine did the pulsating thing after I installed a new carb. Then I adjusted the linkage between governor and carb according to the book which fixed the problem.

Fixed!!

Problem with it not meshing was that the replacement gov was also off off an H, and had it's drive gear left on..................

The friggin gear was 1/8" WIDER than the one coming off the tractor, with the SAME # of teeth.

The shaft connections between the carb and gov look like where the problem was!....Thanks guys!

Gear was already on never taken off the replacement. Found it to be a larger diameter than ours by1/8"...........ain't that a kick?!

I was describing the sound like when older Detroit's bounce on the governor when cold and it sounded just like what this H was doing.
