hi, i just bought a farmall super md and heres the deal i would like to more about these things and was wondering if there were any good websites or anything of that nature. This tractor is all original, the engine has been overhauled once in its life, it shows 6,000 hours on it, new clutch, new rear tires, runs great on gas and switches to diesel perfectly, it does smoke all the time but not much, no leaks whatsoever, trans good no noise whatsoever, live hydralics, pretty much all it needs is paint but im not sure im goin to paint it, i kinda like the HISTORIC look, idk. Tell me what you guys think! oh and also is there an absolute way to start these engines such as run time on gas before switch to diesel, and do you shut it off on diesel or switch to gas before shutting her down. the guy i bought it from told me how i was just wondering to make sure. ANY information would be very greatly appreceated. THANK YOU! oh and also i paid 3,500 for it, was that to much?

Shutting it down while on diesel is OK to do if it hasn't been pulling at full power. I have many hours on a WD-9 and if it had been on a full load, we always let the engine run a bit without the heavy load before shuttng it down from diesel. The theory says that you can crack the head if it's shut down right after heavy sustained pulling.

Oh, contrary to what some people think, not everything we want can be found on a WEBSITE.

I would say that is a good price for any Super MD, much less one that has been overhauled. Where are the pictures??? As for start-up and shut down, you will probably get a few different answers. Personally, I was always told that the head trouble is general caused by the small starting valves on the gas side; thus you never want to let them get very hot. So I switch mine over as soon as possible (probably within a minute or less of starting). Always shut down on diesel; if you have been working it and its hot, let it idle for a little bit to cool down and then shut it off. Thats just my opinion though...

I cool mine off on diesel and then shut it down on gas. It seems to restart easier that way (less smoke) I ALWAYS pull the decompression lever back to diesel after it turns off on gas. This is the way the book says to do it so I do it that way.
Not a bad price. Better if the rear tires are good.
The manuals will replace this website anyday. This is the best one out there though. Guy Fay has some good books about Farmall history and tractors and all that.

At that price are you sure its a SMD and not a MD. You need to get an owners manual to get the proper operating details correct. Pretty common practice is the cooling down before shutting off the engine.

Hi Andrew53farm: Congrats on buying it. I grew up driving an MD and a late (stage2?) '53 SMD. Father was a trained diesel mechanic and was very fussy. He required everyone switch to gas for a minute before switch off. Once stopped, return gas settings to diesel. This, ofcourse, was after part throttle on diesel for 5 to 10 minute cool down from heavy loads such as plowing. (That 10 minuts were to be used greasing plow and checking all equipment etc... he did not allow lazy people around his machines)
He said IHC factory stated that on a 'Standard Day' Engineers used, 59F and 29.92 bar-pressure, the normal Gas run time was 600Revs which is about one minute. On warm days he would start on gas and a minute later when switching to diesel, he would stop gas and only then Quickly open diesel. This eliminated all that smoke which could foul plugs on gas.
JimN sez to stop without going to diesel but only after cooldown in diesel, if needed. WE got the 6th MD sold to the public befor and never had a cracked head on MD or SMD using the methods I wrote above. The MD did all heavy work on 2 farms plus lots of custom work. It was the 'Prime mover' all during WW-2. Great engine for its time.. for certain. No cool down by people too lazy to follow instructions resulted in many cracked heads. Always blame the factory engineers before reading instructions?
Good luck with yours. ag

The above should say "without going to GAS..."
Sorry JimN... just a typo.. on older slower fingers. The MD and SMD engines really were darn good Waukesha design way back then. ag
