IH 424 Head Gasket

I have a 424 that has oil in the radiator and have been told it's a head gasket issue. How difficult would this be to repair on my own considering I have the space and basic mechanics tools. Also, how effective would be those solutions in a can type of products on the market? Are they legit or purely money makers?

It's a relatively staight forward job. You will need a torque wrench if you don't have one. Just disassemble noting where each part goes and know the retorque value of the head and valve lash value. If you have the new gasket sittin there it's an half hour to hour job tops. Assuming that is the problem

For the can stuff it depends ho bad the leak is. If you have more oil than antifreeze in your radiator than the gasket needs to be replaced. Eventually the gasket will need to be replaced anyways. Depends how much you use it ultimately

Gas or diesel? Not that it makes a WHOLE lot of difference, but the diesel is a little more unforgiving of surface cleanliness, clean threads, and exact torque value/procedure.

It's a diesel with the tractor overall being pretty beat up. Power seems a little weak.

Hi LJS30, I did a head gasket on a BD-154 in a B-
414D several years. Not very difficult but require
torque wrench and feeler gauges to set valve
adjustment. Be sure to clean all the bits of the
old gasket off the head and cylinder block.
Inspect cylinder head and block for any indication
of cracks or damage. Re-install, torque bolts in
proper sequence, adjust valves and run engine
until up to operating temp, re-torque bolts and
re-adjust valves.

Well it sounds very straight forward and simple overall. I'll grab some manuals and get to this thing.

I have the feeler gauges but will need to pick up a torque wrench. Once you did the head gasket did you notice a difference in engine performance?
