Touch Control on a C

Ran out of funds for my 1949 C (which was my grandfather's) so I buttoned her back up and saw what the fruits of my labor was. This past spring it was all electrical & fueling. I figured if I had any major mechanical issues, they would surface after that. With a little prompting she fired right up. Starts and runs very well. The only major item I can see is that one half of the touch control does not work. I did drain the unit and clean the filter. When it was empty, I could manuever both sections forward and back manually. However, the lever on the right side (when you're on it) always felt like it was binding. Once I started the tractor and pressure built, that cylinder moved to the forward postion and will not respond to the control. In fact, if I force that lever a bit, the good cylinder will move. I haven't much intention of using the hydraulics, but I would like them to work. Anybody have any ideas and a go to for repairs on the touch control maybe in Michigan or at least the midwest? Thanks for all your help!

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be air in the system. I suggest you run the hydraulics back and forth with thr fill plug out to let air escape. I hope thats your problem but at least it doesn't cost anything to try.

When you said both sections moved were you talking about the lift arms or the control rods. If your control rod is not free you have no control to move the arm. If the right control does not move you need to determine if it is the lever that is stuck or the valve in the touch-control. Undo the rod that connects them and free up the part that is stuck. Then see what it does.

Part of my problem is that I'm not sure what the proper name of parts are. When I say that both sections moved, I'm talking about the half moon shaped items connected to the cylinders that the implements attach to. When the resevoir was empty, I could push them back and forth. The lever on the problematic side was very tight, and would only move if I moved the cylinder in or out. That item moved foward once pressure built in the system as the engine ran. The lever itself is almost impossible to move now. I'm afraid I'll break something.

Don't force it. Undo the rod that connects the lever to the Touch control. See how the lever moves. If it is stuck use some penatrating oil and free it up. If it is OK then while it is still disconnected try to move the valve on the Touch control. If it moves easily reconnect, if not, try to make it move with a pry bar being careful not to break anything. When they both move freely reconnect and see if it works.
