Farmall C: Hyd. Pump: Need Kit, can't find one

Hey everyone.
I have a C that needs the kit many talk about, the one that you use for when it leaks oil past the drive gear and into the engine.

I had a look at some of the parts dealers that ship to Canada (where I am) and I could not find one.

I have determined it to be a O-Ring type pump, and if you want to have a look at the photos, here is a link to a page with images listed. Have a look at #5 and #8 to see the pump and the shaft with the wear on it... http://productionfield.com/FTDResized/

Does anyone know where I can get one of these kits online? I have tried to find it on IH's site, but found nothing. A link to the kit itself would be fantastic, but anything will do.

Thanks for the help.

ASSUMING you can access the same parts site we go to here south of you from your location, go to the link below, then enter "Farmall" as the model and scroll down to "C".

Then go to "hydraulic system" and choose "168, hydraulic system" and you will see the parts breakdown and rather long (and ambiguous) listing of individual parts and kits available for the pumps of various manufacturers that were used.

Yeah, I can access the site, and I found the section you talk about. Also seems like they will ship to Canada which is great.

After looking at mine and the one shown there, I can see the similarities, but the biggest difference is that the one there has the oil seal and not the o-ring.
I read on some of the other posts that a "speed sleeve" as well when you have the groove from the o-ring or oil seal.
So what I need to know now is what kit or parts do I need? Another helpful thing to know would be what pump do I have, but I have not heard of the difference to be able to determine one from another...

Thanks again for the help and time

A lot of those pumps have an IH part number stamped into them, usually on top. It is usually a fairly light stamping so you need to clean it thoroughly and and look closely. With that number, picking the right kit will be easy.

With an "O"ring seal, the best is to just use a speedy sleeve, Then the groove for the O ring in the housing must be machined to slightly larger to allow the sleeve to go into the housing. The Speedy Sleeve or other brand repair sleeve is usually available at a good auto parts store. Teflon "O"rings can be found to make it a great repair.
Plan the process such that it can be assembled. Jim

I had that same problem a few years ago. Local dealer wanted to give me one of those seals, when my pump had an o-ring. None of the o-rings available at local auto parts stores was the correct size. Traveled to another dealership, (same owner), and the could not help either. Ended up about 100 miles away at a dealship that had been in business many years, likely when these tractors were sold new, and finally got a knowledgable parts guy, and after looking at microfiche AND his computer disappeared into the back and emerged with the correct o-ring. Wish now I would have gotten two and sealed the spare up and put it where I knew where it was with all the trouble I had finding one. Original dealer tried to sell me a new pump for over $600. Ironically that was his last day, and he made it obvious his interest was not in putting my tractor back in service so I could get back to the hay field. By the way, mine did not need a speedy sleeve, and new o-ring fixed the problem nicely.

Whenever I need a o-ring or seal i head to my local hydraulic motor shop. The IH dealer o-rings were not even close to the right size. This guy looked at the shaft and said OH, you need a xyz123 and walked back into the shop and got one. Didn't even ask what it was for. I am guessing there has to be someone in your area that rebuilds hydraulic pumps and motors, give them a try.

Leaking hydraulic oil past the O-ring and into the engine??? I just aquired a "well used" 1951 Super C. The ears on the engine oil level checking pet cocks were broken off both petcocks, so the PO must not have checked the oil very often. I finally got them open, and about FIVE QUARTS of oil drained out of the TOP pet cock!! and.....the Hydraulic reservoir was empty, and the hydraulics are dead. Maybe my engine was full of hydraulic oil??

Yeah sounds like you have the same problem as I do.
The pump comes off fairly easy, theres 2 longer bolts that go through the pumps casing and grab the threaded holes on the engine block. If you pull out 2, and one is shorter, put it back in and your pump wont fall apart.
Even though i had to use a bit of pull to get mine apart.

I doubt there's many places that specialize in hydraulic pump repair around town here. I will have a look and see what there is.

I'm not sure if the C pump is the same or close to the super a pump - but either way, if the shaft is 5/8" diameter - I found the speedi sleeve through advance auto - part number 99062. It's a special order, I couldn't find it in stock anywhere.

(I had to tell it I owned a 71 ford f100 for the part to actually come up - HATE those automotive sites)

My O-ring is 5/8 id 7/8 od - 1/8 thickness.

I got mine through a local industrial supplier - but you can find them many places on the web.
