dumb question on TA

I"m looking at a used 460 with a loader that seems to be in pretty good shape (visually). Have just seen pictures online going to look at it this weekend.

Don"t know a dang thing about IH or the TA, I have old Fords. What is the TA, how do I know the one on the 460 I"m looking at is OK?

What else should I be looking for in an old used 460?

Thanks.

If you can try it out under a load, even if it's just up a good hill, snatch the TA lever back and see if it drops the speed some and pulls good. Do not baby the lever, pull it back like you mean it... not made to ease into low TA. Same for going back to the high side... squeeze the handle and push it forward.

The Torque Amplifier (TA) is like shifting down a half gear. They are very useful when working dirt and you hit a tough spot. DON'T use them to slow your load going down a hill. They can't do that and will actually speed the tractor up.

Start out in 5th TA back and full throttle. Let out the clutch pretty rapidly without stalling the engine. the tractor is now stressing the TA about as much as it can. When the RPM gets leveled out, Put the TA ahead (rapidly) it should shift like an automatic trans into direct.
Always shift it into and out of TA as rapidly as possible on the stick. It is slipping and wearing out if you don't do this. Jim
