656 Diesel switch to one wire alt.

We have a 656 Diesel we want to switch to a one wire Delco alternator. All the wiring diagrams that I find show a conversion with a ammeter. We only have the idiot light. Where do we hook the big wire that come out of the alternator? All the pictures show hooking it to the ammeter. Also this is a diesel, so no coil/distributer/on-off switch. But we do have glow plugs. Tractor doesn't get used much, but would be nice to have it charging. Generator or regulator is messed up as it isn't charging now. Figured it would be cheaper and easier to put altenator on it.

Normal practice is to connect the alternator output wire to the battery side ("hot") terminal on the starter solenoid. However you can also connect it directly to the battery positive terminal if that's easier.

Unfortunately the Delco 1-wire alternator will not accommodate an idiot light. Suggest instead mounting a voltmeter with an on/off switch in the dash to monitor alternator operation. Wire the voltmeter directly between the battery + and a good ground.

You can go with a 3 wire conversion. big wire to bat, #1 to idiot light and #2 to the bat post on the alternator.
