574 power steering

I have had the steering fail, while coming down hill, twice on my 574. The first time the Hyd. oil was low, topped it off and everything was fine. Today the steering failed and the hyd. oil is full. I had a set of plows on it and both the draft and control lever were in the up position (I usually have the draft lever down). It was hot, but the engine temperature was OK. I did not check the PTO.

Any Ideas?

Hi, probably hydraulic splitter valve in the MCV is sticking. The valve is supposed to split 3 GPM to PS and PB and 9 GPM to 3pt and remotes.
Sometimes if you dead head the remote until the relief valves squeals, the splitter valve will unstick.
If you are mechanically inclined, you can remove the splitter valve from the MCV and clean it up with emery cloth to prevent it from sticking in the bore.

Jimb2,

I have been reading the archives on PS and related Hyd. problems on a 574. Before I take the splitter valve out I want to make sure that is where my problem probably lies.

When the PS fails, the steering wheel turns freely but nothing happens to the front wheels, it has only happened when going down a steep hill. The first time the fluid was low but the second time fluid level was over full. All other hyd. work pretty much as they should, even draft control. If lifting an implement with the 3PH, the PS works hard until implement is lifted. Steering wheel does not free wheel under that circumstance. My hyd. system has been drained and a new filter and fluid installed a year ago when I had the PTO clutch rebuilt.

Hi Bill, the steering wheel should never free wheel, if the hydraulic pump stops supplying pressure the the steering wheel should just be hard to turn as now the hand pump in the steering mechanism is being used.
Most likely caused by an air lock. Be sure transmission is over filled by 5 gal.
