Anyone have automotive tires on front of their H?

My 1942 H currently has 6.50 X 16 tires on the front which are just rotten. What size auto tires can I mount on the factory rims? I'm not ready to spend $100 a tire just yet, as I'm trying to get the engine unstuck and to a point where I can move it around a bit while I work on it. I'm thinking about running down to the local junkyard and pick up a couple of used tires and a set of tubes to run, until I get to the point I can do a "proper" restoration. Thanks.

They are 16 inch rims and a tire 6 inches to 7 inches wide will fit. Most of your car/truck tires are going to be a lower profile. I would try some of your local tire dealers that have farm tires and try to find used implement tires first. My second choice would be to find a set of Farm King tires and spend 50 bucks on each and just do new ones now. I try to do things once instead of the temp thing knowing I'm gonna have to do it anyway.

My 350 wide front currently has old 6.5x16 truck
tires on since that is what it had when it was
purchased. I am planning on replacing them with
correct rib tires soon.

Light Truck (LT) rated tires might be found they are 80 in aspect ratio. And 195 or 205 width will do pretty well. There is no reason not to do it. They will need tubes, because the original H rims will not hold tubeless air. Jim

Measure the tire height and look for tires close to that. Your best bet would be a truck tire. Are there any tire shops around that would sell a used tire? I've got some good ones over the last couple years. Put a set of 4 Coopers on a trailer, that I would not have thought twice about putting on a truck.

Don"t forget to look at some of the donut spare tires, some are 16 inch and tall and narrow. I know the one for my S10 was until I threw it out cause it would not hold air and put a full size spare underneath. Seen a lot of small tractors with donut spares on the front.

I've got a pair of 215-80R16s on one of my Hs. Those tires are actually too wide to fit the rims properly but I was able to squeeze them on. The tires came off my dually truck and were too good to just throw away. I figure they will be good for another for another 20 years on the front of that H.

My H has 6.00 x 16 road tyres on it. They look absolutely awful and the ride is severe. Probably OK if you use 4 ply cross ply tyres, but light truck tyres are hard, so you might as well just use steel wheels and be done with it. Also, because Farmall H tractors in Australia have 28" rear rims, the road tyres make it too high in the front, so agricultural tyres will be going on very shortly.

That is all my grandfather runs on his tractors. They SUCK and ride like CRAP. They steer even worse on wet grass/mud. Go with 3 rib tires.
