A charging problem

Put a new battery in my A this spring and it wouldn,t charge.
Worked ok last fall. Grounded out the F terminal on the gen
and it showed charge. I have already put in two voltage regs
over the years and they are starting to get pricy. So ran a
wire to the H and L switch on the steering post. Now have
good charge on H and a little on L. I guess the old way is
best for me. Here is the question. Should I disconnect one of
the battery terminals after I park the tractor or will the voltage
regulator still stop discharge? The amp Gage seems to be in
the middle. Thanks Craig

The regulator (cut-out) will stop or break the current path when you shut the tractor off. If it doesn't, the amp gauge will register a discharge, and not a little, it'll peg the gauge. You should be OK.

sometimes when battery is disconnected for a length of time, you will need to polarize the regulator. The same is true with an alternator.

All is well. Check the charge of the battery once in a while to be sure it is up. Use high charge when starting and stopping often, or for longer in the winter. Low after 15 minutes when warm. The lights will turn it on to High charge when turned on. Jim
