If I can not save the battery from the preveious post, should I replace with a 6 volt or and 8 volt battery, an 8 should work and does not cost much more, If it would cause more problems I'd rather stick with a 6 volt

Stick with a 6 volt battery!

An 8 volt battery is gonna be difficult to keep fully charged. It'll also shorten the life of the ignition points - and lights if you've got 'em.
 
8 volt battery is a band aid fix for other problems and a good 6 volt charging system will only keep an 8 volt battery at around 7 volts so in the long run your not much is any better off and when was the last time you found a battery charger that would charge an 8 volt battery. Shoot it is getting hard to find one that will charge a 6 volt battery now days
 
If it came with and was designed for a 6, keep a 6 in it. Goes back to the old saying, if it ain't broke, don't fix it and definitly don't try to redesign it.
 
not to start an uproar, my w-6 had a 6v in it. started fine, had a 8v sitting around, put in and starts same. has mag. genny shows 15>30 amps charging at half throttle. no problems.
 
Go with 6.it was designed for 6.Everthing will last longer and work better with 6.a friend put an 8v in a JD'H'-fried allthe lights.
 
As the others said get the connections clean and tight and the 6v will be fine. We've had both and I don't think the 8v was any great advantage.
 
I would check the CCA's on the 6v and compare it to the CCA on the 8v battery. I have an IH 300U which is the same engine that's in your Farnmall 300, and in the winter here in upstate NY, a single 6v cannot keep starting this tractor. I finally put in a second 6v battery, in parallel, and mounted it in the tool box behind the seat. O guage wire, and now it will start in the winter on any day. My advise is to go with what works for your location, weather and needs. Yes, 6v bulbs will burn out quicker on 8 volts, small price to pay for your tractor to start easy.
