Mufflers Letter Series

They were an option. Recommended in the brochures if operating near built-up areas. If one goes back to the 1930s, mufflers were a much less common attachments and they did not appear in the parts lists for most of the F series tractors or their equivalent W and O series tractors such as the O-12 etc. All IH tractors of the 30s and 40s the exhaust pipe just cleared the hood, what was done after that was the operators choice.

Hi Delta Red, I have a 1945 all fuel H with its original muffler still fitted. When you get more than 10 feet from the tractor you can not hear the engine running on tick over. MJ

I sure wish you could get those mufflers again!

Our Farmall B came from factory with no muffler. It had a unit that run the exhaust lift. Dad didn't like the exhaust lift so he took it off and put a muffler on it. Later put live hydraulic on it.

MJ, you are deafer than I am. The reason I am deaf is that I put about 5000 hours on an H in the 50's WITH a muffler. You can easily hear an H a half mile or more away -- I lived about 1/2 mile or more from our main operation. BUT, what is "tick over"?

I've been around a couple of Hs with an original style muffler. The one that has the much smaller diameter stack. Those mufflers are QUIET. In fact, the last H with that muffler I saw was belted up to a corn sheller, running wide open, and working hard. All I could hear was the hum of the engine. Could not hear any exhaust noise at all.

Quiet is relative. When I started driving the 47 H at in 1950 at age 12, it had the original muffler, the one with the short pipe. It was replaced 2 or 3 years later with the one you are talking about (I think). It was not quiet, but had the "original" sound (I like that sound) that those mufflers gave. Perhaps they also had a baffled muffler in those days, this one was straight through. As far as I'm concerned the sound of Mark's mufflers are identical to the sound of that old H. I think our ears are different. The current CaseIH mufflers are baffled, at least the one on my Super A is. I still consider it loud, and I've lost at least 50% of my hearing. Hearing is different for different people. To my ears the exhaust is probably 75% of the noise of any tractor. I also hear the roar of the engine, but that ain't no hum.
